adidas-sponsored athletes will have one more reason to smile should they win the ultimate top prizes at this year’s Rio Olympics. The groundbreaking, tailor-made, 3D-printed shoes will be given to a select group of medal-winning athletes by the sportswear giants. The printed running shoes will be the brand’s first, maybe even making the pair more coveted than the winning medal itself. As an added bonus, the laces will come in either gold, silver or bronze to represent the athlete’s Olympic success.
With its engineered 3D web structure, this new technology means adidas need not go through the typical process of gluing or stitching. The heel is 3D printed as well, bringing it into the upper of the shoe which is also made up of new, highly-breathable Primeknit. So far, there is no information on when the 3D-printed Winners Shoe will be released. Of course, priority will be given to the winners at Rio 2016.
