The race for forward-thinking footwear continues to unfold as a new story regarding Nike and Under Armour pits the two sportswear giants against each other over one of the industry’s top sneaker designers. Earlier this year we reported how UA’s Senior Vice President of Design Dave Dombrow, widely regarded as the brand’s best footwear designer, had left for team Swoosh, only to now move back to the company he first built a name with.
Due to undisclosed reasons, Dombrow will be welcomed back to UA’s Baltimore headquarters this August with a shiny new Chief Design Officer title and will be overseeing the brand’s entire apparel, footwear and accessories collections. In light of recent events, Dombrow will also still be honoring the terms of his contract’s non-compete clause that states he begin working for Nike in 2017.
“In his time at Under Armour, Dave played an instrumental role in creating innovative and cutting-edge footwear with international acclaim. As Under Armour continues to evolve the key pillars of innovation and design while expanding global growth in all categories, Dave’s unique abilities to challenge the status quo and to anticipate the needs of the future athlete are exactly what we need to further our success,” praised Under Armour co-founder, Kip Fulks. “I continue to be humbled and amazed by what we have built together, fueled by the core commitment to innovation and design, as well as the entrepreneurial drive to make all athletes better. I can’t wait to help create our next chapter,” Dombrow said in response.
With previous experience at Nike and PUMA, Dombrow is recognized for his work with UA, having been responsible for many of their best-selling footwear products including the Under Armour SpeedForm Apollo as well as Stephen Curry and Cam Newton’s signature sneakers.
