Willy Chavarria’s designs are inherently tied to his identity and his heritage. His last collection was titled “Cholo Les Chic,” and it pulled inspiration from both contemporary Chicano streetwear and traditionally dapper gentleman’s apparel.
For his latest SS17 line, created with street style apparel company BrandBlack, Chavarria continues to explore themes of identity but on a much larger scale. The collection is titled “Fuck Hate,” and is a striking exploration of the current immigrant experience in America.
To bring this vision to the forefront, Chavarria enlisted documentary photographer Carlos Jamarillo and casted an ensemble of models comprised entirely of first and second-generation immigrants. The collection itself is built around a wide swath of menswear essentials, united under a largely flesh-toned color palette (with a deep teal making for a slight exception to the rule).
Some of the most striking pieces include the round-collared rain poncho/cape, the rich off-peach turtle-neck and the loose-fitting shirt and shorts combo paired with a gold sash, evoking streetwear for a classically-trained ninja.
Willy Chavarria’s “Fuck Hate” SS17 collection is on sale now at his New York pop-up, look out for it to appear on his online store.
