Here’s How Pow! Wow! Japan is Bringing Street Art Culture to Tokyo

Everyone knows you’ve got to hustle hard in the city. Relief and redemption come through the small things: green spaces, good transport, public art for the street.
In a place like Tokyo, where space is at a premium, daily traffic rages. It’s a city where, as Pow! Wow! Japan’s head, Emily Okamoto, says, traditionally, even the smallest scribble by the sidewalk gets removed in an instant.
One group that is attempting to change this is the global art collective Pow! Wow! We joined with smart magazine as Pow! Wow!’s Japan chapter attempts to change the way Tokyo’s traditionally more conservative citizens approach mural culture and street art.
With smart magazine celebrating creative solutions for living in the built environment, the film suggests that a new kind of city is possible: A city filled with visual expression and, as it happens, efficient, unobtrusive personal transport. We took to the streets in one of Smart’s instantly recognizable urban roadsters, the smart fortwo, for a unique perspective on the Japanese capital and to hear Pow! Wow! Japan’s story.

Be sure to check out the film and our exclusive shots of the city withsmart magazine, above.
